Special shift planning, modified workflows, or shortened operating hours are not required.
After a brief 10- to 15-minute refueling break, the loader was able to complete a full shift and resume operations. This detail is important because when new power technologies are introduced in a wheel loader for sale, downtime and the logistics of refueling become major concerns. In this instance, hydrogen demonstrated that it could match diesel in terms of both practicality and performance.
Does this hydrogen-power technology use a diesel platform model as its foundation?
Liebherr has confirmed that the prototype is directly based on the diesel-powered L 566 wheel loader, but it has not disclosed the L 566 H’s complete technical specifications. The diesel model has 272 horsepower and, depending on configuration, an operating weight of about 51,700 to 58,300 pounds. It also has a maximum bucket capacity of 15.7 cubic yards, so it’s a serious production machine rather than a compact or experimental model.
Liebherr’s decision to build the hydrogen version on an existing and proven platform signals that this technology is intended for real-world construction environments rather than concept showcases. The test reinforced this idea when the L 566 H was used to load hydrogen-powered Mercedes-Benz Arocs trucks from Daimler, as well as a MAN hTGX truck, as part of a complete hydrogen-powered material cycle.
Is hydrogen fuel more distinctive than diesel?

Has Liebherr introduced the hydrogen-fuel technology for the first time?
The L 566 H is not Liebherr’s first attempt at hydrogen-powered construction equipment. In the summer of 2024, the company unveiled the prototype loader as well as its own hydrogen filling station in Austria.
