Working with heavy machinery like excavators requires that you maintain your equipment properly. A lot of times, proper track maintenance is overlooked when crawler excavators are involved. Although the entire machine’s weight is supported by the tracks, they do not get as much attention. That is why it is very important to learn how to adjust the track tension on your excavator properly. There are a few steps that you can take to ensure that your crawler excavator has the proper track tension.

Elevation

First, you need to make sure that the upper structure of the excavator is turned in a way that puts the boom at a 90-degree angle from the travel direction. Another thing that you can do to ensure that the track tension is adjusted properly is placing the arm in a perpendicular position to the ground. Make sure that the bucket is level with the ground as well. You should press down using the boom so that the track on one side is elevated and suspended above ground level.

When you are operating the crawler excavator, make sure you are doing so on the elevated side of the tracks. Take several turns with the track so that any loose binding links or debris is dislodged. After bringing the track to a stop, remember to engage the hydraulic safety switch of the excavator while the track is suspended.

Take Measurements

While you are in the cab, have a worker take measurements of the tracks. Have him measure the track from the bottom to the top of the track shoe while it is hanging at its lowest point. Once you have the measurements, you can compare them with the appropriate tension specified in the user’s manual.

The Grease

The adjuster cylinder’s grease is important for maintaining the track tension. If you need to make any adjustments to it, you will find instructions for doing so in the user’s manual. You can find the adjustment fitting for the grease on the frame of the track, close to the idler.

If you need to tighten the track, you can do so by injecting grease using a grease gun. If you need to loosen the track, you can use a wrench and loosen the fitting in order to release grease. Make sure to wear proper safety gear as the grease will be under pressure. If you are not sure about your ability to deal with it yourself, you can call your local heavy equipment dealer for assistance.
