With summer just over the horizon, it is time for all heavy equipment owners to start preparing for the hot weather that will soon be upon us. There are a few different measures that you can take in order to prolong the life of your equipment. If you want to prepare your equipment for the summer but are not sure where to start, you are in luck. Here, we have assembled a few tips that will help keep your equipment in the best possible condition even in the summer heat.

Start Prepping Ahead of Time

Do not wait until summer begins to start prepping your equipment for the heat. Instead, start preparing for the summer heat now. Always ensure that the equipment is clean. There are certain things that you need to pay extra attention to, such as the radiator, and be sure to keep a close eye on the air flow passages as well.

Also, remember to grease your equipment in a timely manner. Make sure that you are up to date with the maintenance schedule. Another important preparedness step is to check the fluid levels regularly.

Shield the Equipment from Sunlight

Try to store your equipment in a storage room or a place that does not get a lot of sun. If that is not something that is possible, then you could try to reduce the equipment’s sun exposure by covering it using tarps. Prolonged heat exposure can really damage your equipment and affect its life. Taking these measures will go a long way in preventing heat damage and prolonging the life of your equipment.

Avoid Working in Peak Sunlight Hours

During peak sunlight hours, the heat can be quite intense. Stopping work altogether during the daytime may not be possible, but you should try to avoid working on days when there is a heat advisory in place. Doing so will ensure that your equipment does not overheat and that your operators will be safe.

Keep an Eye on Displays During Heat Waves

When you are working during peak hours, make sure to pay close attention to the displays of your equipment. If you see that your equipment needs to cool down, move the machine into a place with shade. Let it run idle before powering down the engine.

Do Not Forget About the Batteries

Usually in the summertime, people pay attention to tires and engine belts and ensure their proper maintenance, but a lot of people forget about the batteries. If you work with a weak battery in intense heat, it could end up malfunctioning. To prevent that, make sure that you always keep your unit charged and that the electrolytes of the battery are always at the advised level.
