Recent years have taken an emotional toll on heavy equipment owners due to the shortage of reliable heavy equipment suppliers as well as machinery. Fleet owners face an unfavorable heavy equipment supply chain cycle, losing negotiating leverage.

Due to increased prices of heavy machinery, feet owners’s power to acquire machinery has almost diminished. Moreover, managers do feel that they can’t get a strong incentive from such fleets.

With long lead durations, deferred or canceled inventory orders as well as sudden price increases are further decreasing the fears of fleet owners.

All these constraints are for fleet owners pulling off fleet owner’s trust from heavy equipment suppliers as well as blocking new opportunities.

Discovering The New Age Of Fleet Allocation

Due to supply chain obstacles, fleet managers cannot trust OEMs, dealers, and other heavy machinery suppliers. With horrendous experience rates, in transparent communication, fluctuating prices, and betrayals by dealers, buying heavy equipment has become a nightmare for them.

Even some owners expressed waiting for machinery for 10 months, only to have their orders canceled with a note to reorder at a higher cost of 5k dollars.

By the same token, OEM  allocations have become a big issue for a couple of years. Even if owners have the same supplier they are facing allocation issues in receiving the heavy-duty machinery.

No warning before order cancelation is yet another concern faced by the owners. It turns asset management into an even more complicated task, especially for loyal buyers.

Delayed Or Cancelled Shipments As The Add-Ons

Delayed replacement schedules further complicate matters, even when buyers wish to acquire the equipment later.

In 2023, a total of 50 to 60% of fleet owners placed orders among which 40 to 50% needed replacement and didn’t get replaced. It increased the acquisition expenses, increased interest rates as well as a hike in the unscheduled maintenance regime for heavy machinery.

Busy service lines and higher mileage hurt the machinery, and even remarketing failed to increase sales. The only silver lining is that some fleet owners have the option of shipping vehicles from renowned OEMs in the U.S.

The resistance offered by OEMs is yet another reason why fleet owners find it hard to uplift inventory. This has led to increased dissatisfaction among fleet owners as well as drivers.

Fleet Management Is Still A Challenge

With all the mentioned concerns it is still hard for owners to manage new inventory or even manage the existing one. Due to these disruptions, professionals or solo owners are re-planning operations to save operational efficacy’s decrement.

Moreover, increased demands from clients with all these issues have further made it hard for owners to manage heavy equipment fleets.

With increased pressure, middle age, and unforeseen consequences, several fleet managers have resigned from their jobs. On the other side, some fleet owners, with constant hustle and input, have also managed to secure reliable heavy equipment suppliers.

Due to good reason, it has helped owners to invest in quality heavy equipment and attain project’s success at a good rate.

Time Makes It All Well

The only path to re-establishing the trust of owners and buyers is to provide a collective solution to the inventory management process.

Without blaming one and another, the focus of suppliers and dealers should be facilitating the needs of fleet owners. However, it will require time, hard work, and dedication but with focus and the right partners, it is possible to mitigate in 2024 and beyond.

Along with the suppliers, the fleet owners also have to walk the extra mile to create a lasting and reliable business and customer relationship.

Compensating for the loopholes will require time and effort, but the repairs cannot be undone. A well-planned transportation line and responsible management are all it takes to get the right thing done at the right time.

Ultimately, in the heavy equipment and construction sector were challenges are common we just can’t focus on hurdle rather join hands to open door for better opportunities.
