Accidents from the heavy equipment do not only cause the financial losses but also raise a lot of questions towards the concerned team. It is not necessary that only fatal accidents are worth investigating, but the ones that disrupt and damage the properties need equal attention.
In the construction industry, the accidents from heavy equipment are quite common. Recently, a very tragic incident was reported from the neighborhood of New Jersey that has left everyone in shock. Luckily no fatal injuries were found, but the massive property damage was enough to raise concerns against the accident.
The accident happened early on Tuesday afternoon, when a 30-ton boom truck collided with a home in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. The boom truck was delivering a hot tub when the accident took place. The crane was abnormally tipping over backward, as per the eyewitness report. The extended boom of the crane crashed through the garage roof.
The cab of the crane is still suspended in midair; that is preserved in the video footage, enough to show how dramatic that accident was.
Were there any serious injuries found?
Remarkably, no one was injured when the crane toppled. The operator had stepped out of the cab just before it collapsed, and other workers nearby scrambled to safety as the boom began to fall. Such tragic accidents due to negligence happen when operators skip the safety measures while operating the construction machinery for sale. Steven Kraemer, the acting fire chief, commended their prompt decision-making, pointing out that they saw the crane’s weight shifting and moved aside right away. The relief was echoed by Hamilton Township Mayor Jeff Martin, who stated that “it could’ve been a far worse situation than what we are facing right now” given the outcome. Afterwards, a local resident told reporters, “You don’t think anything is going to crash through your neighbor’s dwelling.”
How did the investigation and cleanup process go?
Emergency personnel acted quickly. Two more cranes were dispatched by town officials to carefully remove the fallen boom from the roof, and structural specialists will examine the house to look for any hidden damage. In addition, fire officials turned off the house’s electric, gas, and solar power as a precaution. In order to protect the interior from water damage, officials intended to cover the damaged roof section with tarps prior to the impending rain. The prompt action of responders meticulously undid what might have been a catastrophe, piece by piece.
Which safety measure should be taken?
According to authorities, the cause is still being looked into. This incident serves as a clear reminder to equipment operators that even simple tasks need to be carefully planned and subjected to safety inspections.
Before setting up, operators should always check the ground’s stability, make sure the outriggers are fully extended on level, stable surfaces, and make sure the lift radius and load weight are within acceptable bounds. During any lift, team communication is equally important, particularly in confined residential areas. Regular equipment maintenance and operator training can also significantly reduce the risk of such accidents in the future.
