Volvo is taking bold steps back-to-back. Surprisingly, it is getting success in its every step. From making big business decisions to revealing the latest and high-tech equipment, everything is in line with its innovation plan.

Volvo Construction Equipment is making headlines again, this time for its design. The company’s new L120 Electric wheel loader recently received a Red Dot Product Design Award, a prestigious global accolade that recognizes innovative, functional, and forward-thinking design.

According to Volvo CE, the electric loader design departs from the traditional “boxy” shape found in most diesel-powered machines. Instead, this new model has a sleeker silhouette that not only looks more modern but also improves visibility and safety for the operator—all while remaining committed to the goal of sustainability.

The Volvo got Red Dot Award for its innovative design

The Red Dot Award is one of the most prestigious international design competitions, and winning is not easy. The L120 Electric Wheel Loader for Sale stood out for a variety of reasons, the most important of which is how it takes advantage of the flexibility of electric design to break old molds. With no diesel engine to work with, the design teams from Sweden and China were able to completely redesign the machine.

One of the most notable changes is that the battery was integrated directly into the machine’s counterweight. Historically, wheel loaders required a large concrete counterweight at the back. However, in this case, the engineers replaced it with a battery pack, addressing two issues at once: battery weight and counterbalance.

More than just an attractive design

This award is more than just good looks. According to Volvo CE, the new layout improves operator visibility, creates a safer working environment, and contributes to the global shift toward more environmentally friendly equipment. It also demonstrates what is possible when manufacturers make full use of electric machine design rather than simply swapping a battery into a diesel frame.

The design team at Volvo CE hopes that the machine’s new shape will serve as a visual signature of electric power, making it instantly recognizable on the jobsite. And based on the attention it has received, they may be on the right track.

As the demand for electric construction equipment grows, it is clear that design innovation will be critical. The L120 Electric loader demonstrates that going electric is more than just what’s under the hood—it’s about reimagining what heavy equipment can be.

Key features of the new L120 electric loader design

The L120 Electric is more than just a cleaner machine; it is smarter by design.

First, the counterweight’s integrated battery eliminates the need for a separate heavy concrete block, resulting in improved balance and efficiency.

The absence of a diesel engine frees up space and allows for a more compact and modern shape, resulting in improved all-around visibility for the operator.

This also results in less noise, zero emissions during operation, and lower vibration levels—all of which improve jobsite safety and operator comfort.

From sustainability and safety to functionality and appearance, every design decision in the L120 Electric loader was deliberate.

It’s a great example of how electric equipment can be more than just environmentally friendly; it can also set the standard for performance and design.
