Vibratory rollers, sometimes referred to as rollers or compactors, are a type of specialized construction machinery that typically use large pad or smooth steel rollers, either with single- or twin-drum configurations, to compact soil, asphalt, and other materials. Vibratory rollers are most often seen in road-building applications. While rollers that use the weight of the vehicle to compress the surface are called static rollers, those that employ a mechanical advantage (vibration) are called vibratory rollers. These latter machines tend to feature a free-spinning hydrostatic motor with a shaft attached to an eccentric weight inside the drum. The resulting vibrations enable these somewhat light machines to compact material with force similar to that provided by heavier rollers, which are traditionally ballasted with water or solid steel. The lightweight design and hydrostatic drive of vibratory rollers also makes these machines highly maneuverable, and enables them to accelerate smoothly. Additionally, modern vibratory rollers tend to have technologies that prevent over-compaction or an uneven finish, and display graphical temperature mapping.
On large highways or in large landfills, a four-wheel compactor such as a Caterpillar 815/825 series machine is ideal due to its high weight, speed, powerful pushing force, and ability to spread bulk material quickly and evenly. Single smooth-drum compactors are used to compact the high points until the ground is smooth, and this is usually done in combination with a motor grader to get a level surface. Sometimes tire rollers are used for this purpose; tire rollers feature two rows (front and rear) of overlapping tires. The flexible tires provide a kneading action that seals the surface and allows the roller to work effectively in uneven terrain. The final stretch of asphalt concrete installation is established using a paver and compacted with a tandem soft drum roller, a three-point roller, or a tire roller.
